5 spice popcorn

Why not make your own?

Popcorn is a great snack and very appropriate for this time of year. Making your own is very easy and much better than shop bought or the one you put in the microwave.

It takes on any flavour so don't be afraid to experiment and have fun. I chose 5 spice because I'm craving all the Asian vibes this month and of course its delicious.

Popcorn improves digestion, fights inflammation, regulates blood sugar and protects heart health.

You need an oil with a high smoke point. Coconut oil, sunflower or peanut oil is perfect.

It's a 100% unprocessed whole grain. Once you make your own you will become addicted there is something special about it. It's old school and reminds me of childhood.

Ingredients

3tbsp coconut oil

50g corn kernels

1tsp 5 spice

Sea salt (optional)

Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pot. Put on a medium to high heat. To test if it's hot enough add 3 kernels to the pot and if they pop its showtime.

  2. Add the rest of the kernels to the pot and cover with a lid. Remove from the heat. This will bring all of the kernels to the same temperature meaning they will all pop at the same time.

  3. Return the pot to the heat. Keep the lid slightly off the pot to allow for steam to escape so the popcorn remains crisp.

  4. Shake the pot from side to side occasionally to ensure it pops evenly. Once it slows down to popping every 2 seconds its ready to remove from the heat.

  5. Place in a large bowl, add the 5 spice and shake to make sure its seasoned evenly. Taste and add salt if you like.
